Branch with two-digit growth rates
The optical sector in Brandenburg is predominantly structured by medium-sized enterprises. Around 50 companies employ more than 1,300 people. Two-digit growth rates make the optical industry one of Brandenburg’s highly dynamic business sectors.
The optical centre in the state of Brandenburg is Rathenow. No other German location offers such profound added value in the fields of ophthalmic optics / optics / fine mechanics. Besides global players like Fielmann and Essilor, further 25 optical companies with ca. 300 employees and 30 supplying companies are located here.
Research and development
Universities and extra-academic institutions execute the majority of competitive research activities in the region. In Berlin-Brandenburg the focus is on laser technology, optical electronics and fine mechanics. Optical equipment and measurement technology, laser technologies, optical electronics, micro-systems technology and fine-mechanical technologies are further key areas besides the classic ophthalmic optics.
Special fields are biomedical optics, applications for traffic and space travel, internet solutions, UV and X-ray technology as well as light technology.
Networks
Brandenburg’s small and medium-sized enterprises take advantage of their regional network. Approximately 25 enterprises form the Optics Competence Centre Rathenow (KOR). They market their products as one joint brand. The competence network OpTecBB coordinates the sector’s activities in the German capital region.
