The chemical industry is one of Brandenburg’s most expansive sectors. The sector’s turnover increased by 14.3 % compared to previous year; it amounts to 1.62 bn. EUR. Around 4,200 employees work for the chemical industry.
Brandenburg’s plastics processing industry is mainly made up of medium-sized businesses. It covers a broad spectrum of plastics processing. Ca. 3,800 employees work for more than 100 plastics industry companies, including small businesses.
Plastics processing companies (selection): Vestas Blades Deutschland, Wirthwein GmbH & Co. KG, Prettl GmbH, Otto Kunststoffverarbeitung GmbH, Fränkische Rohrwerke and Bruss GmbH. Rubber processers are companies like Pneumant Reifenwerk Fürstenwalde and Motzener Kunststofftechnik GmbH.
The branch in Brandenburg is characterised by a lack of production focuses. Instead, it covers the whole range of synthetics production and processing.
Schwarzheide plastics competence centre
Around 85 businesses and organisations work within the Schwarzheide plastics competence centre by now. It aims to improve the market access for Brandenburg’s synthetic products. The goal is the establishment of efficient cooperation and supply chains: from synthetics chemistry to plastics processing and usage. By 2006, the University for Applied Sciences Lausitz plans to inaugurate a degree in plastics technology. Thus, the succession of specialists will be secured.

The Fraunhofer-Institute for Applied Polymeric Research, Golm and the
Fraunhofer-Institute for Reliability and Micro-Integration in Teltow (outpost polymaterials and composites) are two nationally acclaimed plastics competence centres based in Brandenburg. To combine scientific expertise with economic production- and marketing competence is a challenge of our times.
